Going to USA day after honeymoon

Hi there

I was after a bit of advice. I am getting married on 7th september and we are going to be travelling to to USA on 8th so obviously wont have time to get my partners name changed. We are also going to Canada and will be driving through USA and I dont want us to get stopped and the police be funny with her for having a different name.

Just wanted to check we will be ok or will we need to take our marriage cert with us?

Just do everything and book everything in you pre-married names

There is some way you can get a passport ahead of the wedding to be valid from wedding date. If you go on the weddings board (part of Special occasions and anniversaries) there'll be people there who can advise. I know there's been some brides who are just very keen to travel on honeymoon in their married name. The important thing, whichever way you do it, is that your travel documents (tickets, driving licence etc) and passport are in the same name as each other

If you're travelling under the VWP and need ESTAs, these will have to be in the same name & passport number that you wish to travel on.

It wouldn't be a good idea to get a post-dated passport in the married name as the passport wouldn't be valid to apply for an ESTA until the day of the wedding. The ESTA should ideally be applied for at least 72 hours before travel and authorisation isn't always instant.

It would be much easier and far less stressful just to book everything in the maiden name.

There is an exception for British citizens to fill in the ESTA less than the 72 hours if they are changing their name and using a new passport on their honeymoon. It actually suggests on the US website that you get a family member to fill it in for you whilst you are getting married or something to that effect.

But, its a lot easier to just travel on your current passport and change it all when you get back! (Or when it runs out to save money instead of changing it for the sake of it).

We did the same - as above use maiden names. Take your marriage certificate and tell everyone it's your honeymoon, flights, hotels etc. You'll get loads of freebies, like upgrades, champagne etc

Depends on the hotel but I've been on quite a few honeymoons

Last time I got upgraded to a huge suite, I'd booked a regular room but when hubby needed to email the hotel about something he mentioned the honeymoon. When we arrived we had an upgraded suite. I've also had bubbly for anniversaries and birthday cakes on my birthday (you obviously can't lie about this one but a decent hotel will spot it when you check in from your passport).

That's why I said to take your marriage certificate, in case anyone wants proof (though they usually don't as above!)
