Water softener not automatically regenerating

Hello,

I've got a Monarch Solo Ultra water softener which has stopped regenerating, hence no soft water. It is a non-electric type so a meter/valve inside the unit determines when regeneration should take place (thought I'm not sure on what basis).

I can manually get the softener to generate by turning the top screw. I know that part works because I get soft water, albeit only for a few days. I just need some clues as to what could be preventing the unit from doing this automatically.
