Sold an item but seems to be lost in post!

Sold A Dress for £56 RRP £180, but buyer hasnt received it. I am assuming its lost, what is the process? Surely as a seller Im not liable for full cost...that means I lose out on £56 plus the dress...I have proof of postage but wasnt recorded unfortunately.

Any advice?

Thanks:A

Unfortunately as a seller you are responsible, but how long has it been since posting? You could try phoning the buyers delivery office to see if it is there awaiting collection.

If you do end up having to refund then you need to refund the entire payment, including postage. Then after 15 working days you can use your proof of posting to get a refund from Royal mail.

However , as you only sent standard mail the compensation is limited to a total of £46, so you will be out of pocket.

I assume it had a return address on it, so if it was merely not called for or just mislaid it might still come back to you.

  • Ask the buyer's to confirm their address and allow 2 weeks from dispatch for delivery as well as checking the sorting office, Google the town name and Royal Mail Delivery office for the number.

Hasn't the amount of compensation claimable gone up with the price of the stamp?

I always believed that the compensation was 100 x the cost of the 1st class stamp, so thought that these days it would be 100 x £0.60, i.e. £60.

Happy to be corrected if this isn't the case.

It was the case previously, but stopped with the latest price rise, so the maximum claimable from now on is still £46

    From Royal Mail's web site:-

For stamped or franked items posted with Royal Mail which have no intrinsic value, or where a customer cannot provide evidence of posting, there will be compensation for loss, damage and delay of a minimum of 6 x 1st class stamps at the first weight step. In the event of a compensation claim for loss we will refund the postage paid or 6 x 1st class stamps at the first weight step, whichever is greater.

For lost or damaged stamped or franked items that have an intrinsic value, with evidence of posting with Royal Mail (such as a certificate of posting) and evidence of value (such as an invoice or receipt) customers will be entitled to a postage refund plus compensation for actual loss up to the value of the item, or £46, whichever is the lowest.

    http://www.royalmail.com/delivery/business-delivery-options-uk/first-class-mail/faqs

So £46 is the most you can claim.

And yet you are the one moaning in your sig about how unfairly eBay treats sellers...

Perhaps if you were a bit more responsive to your buyers then you wouldn't feel so hard done by. It sounds like you are getting a lot of negs without contact - you need to reassess how you approach your buyers and see whether you can improve your terms so you get more contact, and possibly also see whether you can be a bit more selective as to what you sell.

Now that feedback can be revised fairly easy it certainly is childish not to try and resolve a problem if at all possible. And what puts buyers off eBay completely is sellers behaving childishly and then shrugging and saying 'that's life'.

No wonder things are flying off the shelves on Amazon for me and yet nothing is moving on eBay.

I've only had one negative in thousands of sales, I'm talking purely hypothetically as it happens :-)

And trust me I do everything I can to help my buyers, they are the sole reason my business survives.

What I don't like is buyers who give no opportunity for sellers to fix problems, before slating the seller unfairly.
