We're moving to a new place in a few weeks & I'd like the phone line sorted before we move in.
The house does have a BT cable from the telephone pole in the street & it was connected a few yrs ago. The tennant moved out & he took the number with him (wasn't a problem with us).
We really don't want to take the number we have now with us cos even though I've registered with TPS yrs ago we still have loads of calls coming through so we want a new number & go ex-directory.
But is it cheaper to take our number or get a new one?

BT recycle numbers, so although you get a 'new' number to you, it may have been used by someone else.
My GF had a new number and it was an ex-taxi rank, lol.0 -
LOL!!! At least if I was ex-directory it would stop most calls! DH's fault we get them - banks ask "do you have a telephone number Mr *****?" and instead of saying "yes I do & you're not having it" he gives it to them. I make one up!0

That explains the high number of calls I get that aren't for me. For those people who think they are clever by 'making up' a number, think nothing of the actual user who might actually have that number.0

I always give them the phone number of Street Cars from Coronation Street - 0161 715 1515. Use that one. Or you could select a premium rate number beginning 09xxxxxxx."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0

It makes no difference to the cost if you port the number or not. Either way, if the existing line has been disconnected then you'll be paying BT a reconnection charge: the standard rate is £130.
There are many cheaper options than that if you take your service from another provider though. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Will I be paying the reconnection charge even if there is a landline to the property? But no number?0
-
Yes, if the line is dead (no dial tone) then a reconnection charge is payable (the same amount as for a new line provision). No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Thank you. Best thing for me to do is establish whether there is a dialling tone. Best take up a phone tomorrow & check!!!0
