Parking appeal

I recieved a parking ticket yesterday for parking on double yellow lines but want to challenge this on the grounds that the attendants car was parked on the very same lines. Also, is there a law that states double yellow lines must end in a single solid yellow line and the whole line must be clearly visable, and what are the restrictions on loading and unloading on double yellow lines?

Thanks for any help

Sometimes, you just have to admit you shouldn't have parked there...

Appealing that the attendant's car was parked illegally will get you nowhere, although it's hugely irritating. Two wrongs don't make a right, etc, etc.

There are innumerable laws about the exact specifications of lines and signs, and these could be used as the grounds for an appeal. The two possible reason you state are valid, if I recall. Lines must be visible along their whole length, and end with a perpendicular terminating line. Round my way there are quite a few (single) yellow lines without these terminators. I don't park on them, but I do consider them "for advice only" as I don't think they are legally enforceable.

You ought to look in the official definitions (available online on the HMSO website) if you want to pursue this. But I warn you, getting your head round the hundreds of pages and the abstruse wording might cost you more in lost time than the parking fine.

"Waiting restrictions indicated by yellow lines apply to the carriageway, pavement and verge. You may stop to load or unload (unless there are also loading restrictions as described below) or while passengers board or alight. Double yellow lines mean no waiting at any time, unless there are signs that specifically indicate seasonal restrictions. The times at which the restrictions apply for other road markings are shown on nearby plates or on entry signs to controlled parking zones. If no days are shown on the signs, the restrictions are in force every day including Sundays and Bank Holidays. White bay markings and upright signs (see below) indicate where parking is allowed."

Check the parking section of the forum at:

There is a lot of very useful information there.
  • I may have been in the wrong for parking there in the first place, but these lines are outside my place of work so I dont really have any other option.

Leaving it in a car park isnt an option as I need it throughout the day.

If I can manage to save myself £30 by writing some letters, then ill try to gather as much evidence as possible to support my argument.

Also, is there a law that states that you have a certain amount of time on double yellow lines, for loading/unloading purposes before a traffic warden can issue you with a ticket.
