Change of telephone number - scam

I telephoned a friend this morning and was immediately connected to a recorded message saying she had changed her telephone number and to ring 0843 289 7904 for details. I tried ringing her again only to get the same message.
Rang the number and was kept waiting five minutes and started to wonder how much the call was going to cost.
Rang friend on her mobile - no she had not changed her landline number. Rang landline again and got strait through.
Question: How could my friends telephone be diverted to this message and is it a scam? The tarrif for this number is g6 except I can't find out what g6 tarrif costs.
I did have an online "chat" with BT about this matter which was as much good as a chocolate fireguard. Eventually the young lady indicated she would have to telephone me and transfer me to "faults". She did this and I sat listening to music for ten minutes and hung up on that one too.
Would welcome your comments.

You possibly misdialed her the first time you rang her, given that when you rung again you got through.Do you have a phone that keeps a record of numbers dialed. If not when you get your next bill check if possible what number you actually rung.0

Do you have online billing? A check there will show the number actually dialled, as you can then confirm whether you misdialled or not. Network-generated number change advices are normally at no cost to the caller, but it is still worthwhile having a look.
There have been no reports of numbers being intercepted for the reasons you state, so I doubd there is a scam, and 0843 isn't a Premium Rated number either.0
