Card skimming - money withdrawn from cashpoints

Hi there
I have just had close to £1500 taken out of various cash points in north London over the past 3 days. I only found this out today when I tried to get money out myself. I called my bank and was told a fraud investigator will get back to me. But the man I spoke to at the bank seemed incredibly unhelpful and almost disbelieving that I have not taken the money out myself. I live in South London and have not been in north London on the days the money was fraudently taken out of my account (by I am assuming a skimmed credit card). Can someone pls advise me on how I will go about proving to the bank I did not make the withdrawals. All the best.

You don't need to prove anything.
If your bank has any doubts they will need to prove that you or someone you know made the withdrawals.
Fraudsters often leave telling footprints which banks are very familiar with.0 -

The most common feature is when the fraudster reaches the daily withdrawal limit they continue to try different cash points in the hope that they may get one last stroke of luck.0 -
The telling poing will if the cash was withdrawn via chip and pin. If it was you maybe SOL because chip's at this stage cannot be duplicated. So the only way the would have been able to do it would be with the card currently in your possession and with knowledge of your pin. Let us know of any update.0

Good point.
My experience came about when my card was caught by a card retaining device but I though it had been swallowed by the ATM and stupidly never reported it as lost.
Because I was able to give a honest account of the indecent I had the money returned so credit to Halifax for that one.0 -
Please don't cut up your debit card either. No matter what the bank tells you as that is the ONLY proof that it wasn't your card that made those withdrawals. The chip records every movement on your card. Destroy that and all evidence is gone.
I watched an episode of Don't Get Done Get Dom where a woman had £17K removed from her account from cash machines and over the counter withdrawal. The bank told her to cut the card up, which she immediately did, and then they lost the cctv footage of the over the counter withdrawal and she had absolutely no leg to stand on. It doesn't matter if it's not you seen taking the cash, as you then have to prove you didn't give someone your card and pin, something the bank won't take your word on.
They also interviewed another couple who were instructed to but refused to cut their card up after the same theft experience. They literally had to force the bank (through a solicitor) to check the records on the chip. Only then did the bank grudgingly return the money to them.
So please DO NOT destroy your card. Just put it away in a very very safe place as the chip inside records every cash withdrawal, swipe machine etc and really is your only proof it wasn't your card used.0 -
Hi
It's an old aussie debit card - without chip technology. I still have to swipe it to use it in the UK - so guessing that is why it was targetted. Somehow they must have got hold of my pin. Anyhow will keep my card safe and not cut it up. Thanks everyone.0 -

They can get your PIN from a tiny camera on the ATM.
For this reason I cover one hand with the other when using an ATM so that even a camera can't see it.0
