Lodger has parking fine - the bailiffs are coming!

My lodger has received 2 hand delivered letters. When I asked him about it he said it was for a parking fine that increased from £35 to over £200, and the letters are from the bailiffs. He says he hasn't got the money.
He hasn't rung the bailiffs and I am worried they will come and take stuff that belongs to me and my other lodgers - either with or without the knowledge of the 1st lodger. I mean, he will deliberately sign up to say stuff is his, when it isn't, or the bailiffs will assume stuff is his, when it isn't.
I've had bailiffs letters addressed to me before now, but I've dealt with them. He hasn't, and continues not to do anything.
What can I do?

Leave the lodgers finances alone. As long as you get your rent then it doesn't matter. The bailiff will not take your stuff. If you are really concerned about it then ask the lodger to leave.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Does you lodger have anything there that is his? Seeing he is being bloody minded and not dealing with it show the bailiffs his property and let them take it.
Alternatively don't let them in they have no right of entry if you don't let them in and you don't leave your doors or windows open.
Tell him to pay it or get rid of the lodger.
Its not really your problem but I would bet you could do without the hassle!0 -
Bailiffs or Debt Collectors? - thers a world of difference
And who issued the original parking 'fine' - a council/police or a private parking company?
And what court issued the CCJ the bailiffs are enforcing?

It was a council parking fine.
He's told one of the other lodgers that he dealt with it yesterday, and is paying them off. Apparently they've threatened to take his car away. So hopefully he will pay it off and I won't fret any more.
It was worrying me, cos I am trying to sort myself out (hence the lodgers) whereas he just took a really cavalier attitude to it.
Sorry to have troubled you, and thanks for your responses!0 -
Oh well in that case you have nothing to worry about, its not you debt, so they cant enter your home (and in fact never ever let a bailiff in, because once you have done so they gain the legal right to enter whenever they like), and they cant take any of your property.

What about when the lodger lets them in, and doesn't deny he owns the tv? It's getting everything back then that will be the problem. He doesn't sound the most capable of people, personally I'd be looking to move him on asap, and posting on the renting forum.0 -
And if he is a lodger he can be chucked out asap as they don't have any rightsFor everthing else there's mastercard.
For clampers there's Barclaycard.0 -

Not completely right, they have what is called Common Law Tenants rights. If the lodger refuses to be thrown out then you'll need a court oder to evict, they cant just be thrown out...aint that simple ! been there many years ago as a landlordYou may click thanks if you found my advice useful0 -
Get decent advice.

They don't have many rights, and don't need a court order.0
