Parcel Stolen by Neighbour

Hi,

I wasn't sure where to post this but here goes...

I ordered a freshwater pearl necklace from amazon for my sister. It cost £35 but was reduced from £120. I paid for express delivery to receive the item in time as I need it before Friday. The necklace was delivered on Monday but I did not receive it as I was out at the time. I only found out it had already been delivered when I went online to track the parcel and it said 'item delivered, left with neighbour'. I checked my post box but there was no note left to provide details of which neighbour it was with (I live in an apartment block).

Anyway, yesterday I knocked on one neighbours door and asked if he had my parcel. He looked vague and appeared to be thinking for a few seconds before saying he gave it to my other neighbour, and that he was half asleep at the time. So I knocked on my other neighbours door and she told me she went and put the parcel on the ground floor in the hallway (this is where all the through traffic comes and goes). So I went downstairs and checked and my parcel was not there. Firstly, I can't understand why she didn't just prop it up against my door and why would she put it on the ground floor when I live right next door to her on the second? Seems really weird. After seeing that the item was not there I went and knocked on her door again to ask her where she left it but she did not answer again.

I got straight onto the phone to amazon and they have offered me a full refund. Trouble is I needed the item for Friday as it was meant for a gift for my sister but amazon do not have the same necklace in stock. So I have paid extra for a larger pearl necklace (I did not want the pearls so big but I'm desperate not to let someone ruin my plan) and have paid for express delivery. For the first necklace I used an amazon gift voucher for part payment. Because I needed the item before Friday I have paid for the new necklace in full on my card. I want the refund to go back to my bank as I had wanted to use the gift card but obviously could not wait for it to be refunded to my account. I have since emailed amazon and hope that they will be helpful with returning my refund to my bank card and have requested they pay the difference for the larger necklace.

I have put signs on the main door asking whoever has taken my parcel to return it to me and no further action will be taken. Shall I call the police as this is quite clearly theft? It sickens me to think someone has taken something that belongs to me and they have not ordered it nor paid for it. I have a suspicion that the lady who apparently left it on the ground floor has taken it but have no evidence. Would calling the police be a waste of time? I also thought about going through the bin bags to check for packaging with my name and address on it but even then it's a long shot I can identify who's stuff is in the rest of the bin bag.

I'm really upset this has happened as the necklace was a gift for my sister and part of a surprise I had planned. Any help and advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

How can you prove neighbour stole the item? Be very careful before making accusations. Report it to police, but I doubt they will be able to do anything.

This is the risk you take, having items delivered to a.n.others in your absence.

It might have been better to have parcel delivered to your sister?

Might not have been a neighbour who nicked it, might've been the driver, who made up the story about delivering to an (unspecified) neighbour in order to cover his tracks with confusion.

And frustrating though it is for you, it's not you who has been robbed, it's Amazon.

I don't think that there is much you can do now considering that you are being refunded.

And to be truthful there is no real way of know who took it unless your building has cameras that you can try and get a copy of the video. but again that will be lucky if you can.

it is odd that you neighbour would leave it in the hall way and not bring it to your door... very strange

Thanks for your replies, I am being refunded for the item and Amazon have agreed to pay the difference in price for the other necklace I have ordered so all is well I guess. I'm just really angry and upset someone would take something that didn't belong to them. I realise this goes on all the time in apartment blocks I just don't know how people don't have a conscious.

As another reply stated, unless there is CCTV footage of where the neighbour claims that the parcel was left and of it being taken, then there is nothing that the Police can realistically do as it is just becomes a he said/she said situation.

It's not actully yours until you have it. I suspect that after investigation they will be a crime number for either the courier or amazon so they can claim money back from their insurers. Police mioght need a statement
Do you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring

To be honest I doubt amazon will even tell the police, they will just make a claim with the courier.
