Stopping gas supply
Options
If you moved somewhere and they had gas central heating, boiler etc... Say you dont want to use it, can you get the gas supply stopped so you dont pay anything for gas, or for the line. Would they charge anything to do this. Or do you just not use the boiler heating etc...and then you wont pay anything or is there a "line rental charge"
cheers.
cheers.

Thats a good question actually.
You can stop the gas by just turning off the control handle at the meter or getting a Gas Safe Registered guy to put a "disc" into the outlet connection.
I dont know if you pay a rental for the meter, I'm guessing you mean like a phone line rental?0 -
so the boiler just goes out after you turn the handle i suppose. then after you turn it on again you just relight it...I know a gas engineer I suppose I should ask him
yeah, its like do you just pay for the gas you use or also a basic "rental" charge per monthHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
I dont know if I'm honest and I'm Gas Safe Registered! lol
I dont have gas.
Whether the boiler will relight or you have to re-light the pilot depends on your boilers age.0 -
There is no need to turn it off unless you have a boiler with a pilot light.
It depends on your tariff - you should check - in some cases you can find a tariff that will be considerably cheaper with a gas line installed but not used.
Simply enter '1' for the usage in kWh per year of gas in any of the switching sites.0 -
The issue is that the meter is "live" hence even if you don't use it, if your tariff includes standing charge, you still have to pay that.
However, if you "de-energise" the meter in some way, the supplier closes your billing account thus stopping the standing charge. For elec, you pull the fuse, for gas its clamping ir collaring.
Another way is to pull the supply completely. The distributor then removes it all however its unlikely they will unless you prove you want to go all elec. Disconnections are normally free but they hit the new owner with a full installation charge if it has to be changed back.
If you clamp or collar, it may be free since its the supplier that arranges it. Most won't charge for this usually. However, you are still living there with a live gas supply and they know it stop standing charges so they may refuse on that basis as it will appear as a vacant de-energised style site to them. Also, if you want it back on it will require them to reverse it so if its free for you, they still have to pay their to do the work, very possibly twice.
So, it depends why you want to do it.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0 -
say you rented a place as second lodging. you only use electric heating, dont need hot water and never cook so dont need cooker. the supplier british gas have a standing charge (im mot sure but i seen figure of 20p a day) its not much to pay, and would be cheaper if disconnection costs money.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you only use elec heating, you could have the meter dealt with if the supplier agrees. Another way to do this is to have it removed.
This also avoids standing charge as the account would close.
If both the gas and elec are with the same supplier and they show them on one bill/in the same account, it won't close the account since the elec still needs to bill, but the gas would show a status that means their system shouldn't bill it.
The supplier should be more reasonable in this case as its not a vacant property in their system.
However, if your gas is with supplier X and elec with supplier Y, its going to close the account making it a vacant style property. They may have an issue with that, but if the meter was clamped/collared/removed, they wouldn't normally have someone living there...so it could just take some convincing.
If you wanted to keep doing it between periods you stay there, they won't do it as its hassle/cost to them when they can just bill you the standing charge.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0 -
I assume the average monthly bill for just elec is £30/month and same for gas so buy doing you could save some money.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

For a gas disconnection the meter must first be removed by the supplier and chances are the network who you would contact after the meter is removed would charge you - please note it would be a permanent disconnection.
If this is a rental property you would probably need the permission of the landlord for this as there would be a charge to reconnect to networkI am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0 -
Why not just switch to an NSC tariff if you are a low user?No free lunch, and no free laptop0
