Tax on travel benefit

Apologies if this is not the right place to post this.

My work have just agreed to pay the cost of my travel which is around £4500 a year. I earn £35000 and following maternity leave I will be going back 3 days a week so will be earning £21000.

I assume the travel will be a taxable benefit which I will complete a SA form for but does anyone know how much tax I would pay on the travel?

Many thanks

  • if you have to pay tax then it should be at 20%,however check with HMRC as some legitimate travelling expenses may not be taxable

Are these expenses for travel between home and the workplace or for travelling around as part of your job?
  • Our taxable benefits are put on our P11D and come off our personal allowance. e.g. our annual BUPA contribution and the £250 we are given towards an annual gym membership. Maybe that's how it will be done, so your tax code will go down by 450?

Its just to pay for my normal commute to and from work (I realise I'm very lucky to have got them to agree to this!)
