Does it have a DMF? If it does you could be looking at a bill of £1000.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

6-7 hours labour plus parts plus VAT. Even at a cheap (£35 an hour) garage that's £210 - £245 just in labour so I wouldn't expect to see much change from £500 if you don't have/don't need a dual mass flywheel.0

Clearly I'm an ignoramus - what is a dual mass flywheel? How will I know if it has one?0

Google will answer the first question for you (and possibly the second). If you want someone here to help you'll need to tell us what engine your car has, and possibly it's age.0 -
Basically, it is two halves of a flywheel with a piece of rubber mounted between them. The idea is that it reduces vibration and also stops the torque from the engine tearing-apart other parts of the drivetrain.
In reality, it is possible to buy a solid flywheel kit to replace it with (very common 'conversion' option on Mondeo/Focus/Vectra etc.). You will get a small amount of extra vibration through the clutch pedal.
Of course, once fitted, you will not need to replace anything other than the clutch when it wears out. MOst kits come with a metal clutch activator arm to replace the plastic one fitted by many manufacturers, so eliminating another purposely-designed weak-spot.
Try eBay as there are likely to be a few sellers on there.Never Knowingly Understood.

Take one heavy and solid chunk of metal. The clutch plate grips it and the starter motor uses the starter motor engages the teeth on the edge.
Usually they will outlast the car.
Some bright spark thought i know lets make the flywheel up of bits of rubber and springs and moving bits that wear out between 70,000 and 130,000.
We can charge them £800 just for the DMF instead of £100 - £200 for a solid flywheel.
Fast forward and from the year 2000 a LOT of cars started having a DMF fitted as standard. Some cars did have them earlier but not many.
Some cars dont take to the idea of a soilid clutch. Many issues with the wearing rapidly or slipping soon after replacement. Or serious judder.
Problem is so far its not clear if its down to the kit not being correctly matched
or poor quality parts.
You cannot just slap a solid flywheel in with the standard clutch. It and the slave cylinder will need to be matched.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
