How much is fair?

No idea where to put this thread so apologies if I've got it wrong.
We are staying with my in-laws for a couple of months whilst we look for a new place to live.
We have offered to pay rent and contribute to food but my MIL won't hear of it. Obviously we must pay our way, do you think £50 a week is fair or too much/little?
That would include getting the food we like as well and buying cat stuff too.

I think it's too little personally. When my house was being refurbished I stayed with my sister and though she didn't want to accept any money other than a contribution towards her feeding me, I gave her £100 week as I felt I'd have to pay at least this to rent a decent room elsewhere, and that would be without food.
Plus I knew her heating bills etc were going to be higher with me staying there as she is very careful with her heating and I'm a chilly mortal.
I did also buy some food items whilst I was living there and when I was finally able to come back home I left £250 under my pillow as a thank you for putting up with me and my cat for far longer than we had both expected at the outset. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
Does seem a little low TBH.
Why don't you offer to buy the groceries and live rent free instead? It is either that or find their bank details and put money in their account, they cannot stop you doing that.
Your OH won't push it as he will think he's back home with his mum and awaiting to be tended to as he used to be ! lol0 -
I also think you should - as you suggest - at least pay for food, heating and hot water for baths etc. I would have thought £100 a week for two people would cover it. If MIL will not take the money, have a word with FIL. He might agree to take the money and then for example book a nice holiday for them both, and tell MIL after the event, or put it towards something they are saving for, or whatever, you see the idea., sneaky does it.

If you cannot afford more, well I guess £50 is a good gesture.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0 -
Thanks for your replies. They finally agreed to accept £200 a month and we'll make sure we treat them regularly.:)0
