Norton Antivirus 2007

Hi Hope someone can give me some advice?? Apologies for long post

Last week I had a error message saying my Norton had expired when infact it wasn't due to expire till 2008. I tried to uninstall and put it back on but I still couldn't get it to work.So I took it to my local pc shop as I also wanted more memory. They reinstalled Norton but when I run Liveupdates the following error messages appear:

LU1860: LiveUpdate has detected a potential security compromise on your computer: one or more entries for Symantec LiveUpdate servers exist in your Windows hosts files.
A malicious entry in your hosts files could prevent LiveUpdate from retrieving updates for your Symantec products, including anti-virus updates. Generally, Symantec LiveUpdate server entries should not appear in your Windows hosts files.
Liveupdate detected the following items in the windows host files:

127.0.0.1 Liveupdate Symantec.com
127.0.0.1 Customer Symantec.com
127.0.0.1 SecurityresponseSymantec.com
127.0.0.1 Service1Symantec.com
127.0.0.1 Symantec.com
127.0.0.1 updates Symantec.com
127.0.0.1 updates Symantec.com
127.0.0.1 Symantec.com

It then says what do I want to do giving me the following options:
Remove the host files(recommended)
Leave these entries in the host files(warn about them later)
Remove these host files (ignore them later)

When I choose the recommended one it then says:

LU1862 Liveupdate was unable to remove the host entries from all windows host files. As a result the liveupdate security warning may dialog may appear again in future runs of live update.
Then I run liveupdate and it shows the following updates

norton antivirus
norton confidentail
security software.

The only one it updates is norton confidential.
The other 2 fails with this message (I think)

LU1812 an update failed to install: A program that was part of this update
failed when it ran. This update was not applied.

I really don't know what to do. I am with Virgin media broadband (Old Telewest) and I don't know whether to try and uninstall Norton and use Virgins free antivirus downloads??

Any advice greatly appreciated??

I would suggest running the Norton removal tool, http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
as this is supposed to remove all traces of Norton from the PC and then reinstall.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

I would suggest the same as above but skip the last step and install something decent like kaspersky, nod32, kerio etc

I'd agree, I've removed people's Norton from their computers (even if they had a subscription to use up) and replaced it with AVG or Avast and they've been better for it. It's not wasteful if you're replacing it with something more effective that won't cost you more.

  • To fix the hosts file error, use Windows Explorer to locate the following file:

    C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts

Once found, right click hosts and choose Open. When given a list of applications to open it with choose Notepad. The contents of your Hosts file will be displayed. Simply remove the following entries using cut and paste:

    127.0.0.1 Liveupdate Symantec.com
    127.0.0.1 Customer Symantec.com
    127.0.0.1 SecurityresponseSymantec.com
    127.0.0.1 Service1Symantec.com
    127.0.0.1 Symantec.com
    127.0.0.1 updates Symantec.com
    127.0.0.1 updates Symantec.com
    127.0.0.1 Symantec.com

Once done, from the Notepad menu in the top left, click File > Save and close the Notepad window.

Then try updating Norton once more.

On a side note, it's rather stranger that these entries would be added to your Hosts file in the first place. This is usually a trick by malware to lower a system's security. Have you got any other security related sites listed in your Hosts file?
