Compost bin overrun by ants!

My DD has recently taken over an allotment plot that has been neglegted so has got a lot of work to do! She's new to gardening and no-one in the family have gardening backgrounds either so I'm hoping to get help on here for her!

On the allotment are 2 compost bins placed about 6-8 feet apart from each other. One is fine, but the other is absolutely rampant with ants! What can be done about them? Are they a problem for the garden? Do we get rid of them, and if so, how? I've honestly never seen so many and it's a pretty squeamish site!

Any information/help would be much appreciated.

PLEASE DELETE (SORRY I DON'T KNOW HOW TO)

Just seen another thread so please ignore this one - have looked at other one and got ideas of what to do - leave off lid (even though they are crawling round it!) and toss some lemon into it. I won't bother watering it, I think we've enough rain to do that for us.

    Hope it works!
