Options
Today my house phone has stopped working when a adsl filter is attached. Internet works fine and nothing is new, the phone works without adsl filter attached to socket. i have tried 4 filters and the internet works with all 4 filters, there is only 1 phone socket in the house. Is worked fine for the last 7 years

Lets see, your seven year old phone suddenly stops working for no reason at all. Maybe, just maybe, your phone is on the blink. :)
Beg, buy, borrow but not steal a different phone and try that.

What do you mean "not working" do you have dial tone? can you dial out? does it ring ... and so on

Have you tried Filter + phone in the BT test socket to eliminate house wiring.

If it isn't the phone then maybe BT have screwed up. It isn't a line fault as your internet works. However when you phone BT to report the fault (from your mobile) make sure that you emphasise that the phone isn't working.

  • I know I have had wine and am finding it difficult to focus but didn't the OP say the phone works fine without the filter?
It's not my fault your honour, they made me do it.
  • Another point. The OP says that the Internet works with all four filters but fails to say whether the phone works with any of them. Could that point be established please.

Yep, but the obvious first step is to eliminate the phone as the problem before ringing BT.

You say that the phone works OK plugged straight into the socket? Do you get dial tone and can you actually dial out? Is there noise on the line (dial a "0" and listen to the line)

We have actually known the internet to work with no dial tone on the test socket, albeit very slowly!

Is the socket you have a split socket, ie can you take a front piece off to find another socket inside, that is the test socket and is the first point on the end of the incoming line, that is where you find out if the line is good or not!

Try the phone in it, then try the internet in it, then both.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

I have tried another phone plugged into the wall that now does not work neither does my phone (which is only about 18 months old) . Would have replied earlier but i work inters shift. The internet is running very slow now aswell. There is no master socket in the house and hasnt been in the 9 years i have lived here.
If you dial the house from a mobile it just rings till it goes to sky phone. Looks like i will have to ring and report a fault
Rang sky its a exchange fault so will be fixed within 72hrs its was the internet working that confused me till i read enterprise1701c post
