Modem speed dropped.

Hi all, thought my computer was running a bit slower than usual tonight and just checked the modem speed - it has dropped to a miserly 14,400bps. It usually runs at 40,000. (It's a 56K V.92)

Have always meant to have a read up on this side of things, but no time as usual.... so, is it down to my ISP or is it something at my end that I can fix?

Time for bed now anyway!

Hi, yes it did. Back to 40k (not getting into the bits or bytes thing!! I know when I'm out of my depth!)

Just confused as to whether it's something that I can stop happening again - or is it all down to my cr*ppy ISP.

Could be something specifically related to the moment of the original connection. Modem might've detected a temporary line noise, which caused it to connect using slower that usual speed, under the assumption that you have a bad line. You should only worry about such issues if they happen on a regular basis.
