Personally I'd book now. Deals are what is leftover and most flights book up early. Sometimes skiing deals come up for Christmas as more people spend Christmas with family and are away for new year instead but if you're looking for sun you could end up with little choice or no discount as lots of people are locked into school holidays and most that many places have guaranteed sun in December compared with other times of the year.

Depends a lot on the weather too

Look at the deals you can get now for Summer, they're nowhere near what you would hope to expect. The poor weather here has kept demand brisk

I know 4 or 5 families that have decided to fly off this year, taken as a late decision.

We always go away for Christmas and New Year and there are never any late deals. One year there wasn't even a single flight out of Scotland available!
I find the earlier I book for that time the cheaper as they just seem to go up and up.If you can be flexible with dates it is usually cheaper departing up to around the 18th December.

Flights out on Xmas Day can often be cheaper too.

I would be inclined to book now if I found a holiday at a price I was happy with. Certainly when I was looking last year the prices really did increase a lot within a matter of a few months (Jun and Sep IIRC)

The effect of the troubles in Egypt and the mild weather here maybe?

I have already booked my flights to Rome and back for our Xmas and new year break, but I am holding on for the cruise price to come further down for the one we are going on, which it is.

It's all part of the game !

I'm usually a fan of late deals but with Xmas/NY is usually pays to book early.

Just make sure have decent travel insurance. I lost a Xmas holiday 2 years ago due that "snow event" at Heathrow. I managed to get the flight cost back but lost the pre-paid hotel as the insurance co. insisted that it was an "act of God" rather than a "act of incompetence by BAA" as I claimed.
