Brake check

I had my car serviced about 3 months ago and specifically asked the guys (at Farmers) to check the brakes as I don't think they respond as well as they should and sometimes I hear them squeal (which I thought meant they need immediately replaced). They said all was fine but I am still hearing the odd bit squealing and I don't want to make a potentially costly situation even costlier.

Is there anywhere where I can get a brake check without getting ripped off (Edinburgh & Lothians area)? I'd rather pay for the check if it meant they weren't going to scr@w me for something else.

I would recommend QwikLube who have garages at Abbeyhill and Musselburgh. They offer a free brake check.

I've used them a few times in the past year for an mot and service, and also a tyre check after I kerbed my car and they were really good.

Chances are the pads are moving a bit int he calipers. Might not have had shims or copper grease applied when fitted.

Given Farmers didn't try to scam you by saying new discs/pads needed you could go back there and simply ask them their thoughts on the issue and if they can fix it cheaply as it is bothering you.

What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?
  • Instead of a visual check ask for a strip down & clean (hours labour max).

Ask them to measure the thickness of the pads & discs using a vernier which can then be compared to the manufacturers min thickness.

Local garage to me does this as part of a normal service which is why I like using them.

Getting rare to find now, surprising how am annual strip clean and *correct* lube including the handbrake mechanism, and fluid renewal every few years can keep a braking system trouble free indefinately where others seem to be always seizing up...used to be known as servicing at one time..;)

Find a local independent recommended by friends and family. Farmers are just KwkFit 2 with guys buying franchises from Sir Tom himself. In theory they should be better, as they are owner managed, but if you are so lost that you have to buy a franchise for a very basic set of garage services, doubt if the mechanical skills are there either.
