There's this guy who's cousins sister brother bought a house for £60k two years ago. They changed the colour of the front gate from blue to green. It's just gone under offer for £1.6m. They are currently negotating to buy a similar house in the same street for £52k. Yes, you guessed....blue gate again.

Hmm but that sounds made up and involves silly numbers.

I on the other hand was referring to an actual real life situation involving good freinds of mine who I spoke with over the weekend and (given they now have an offer in and accepted on a bigger/more expensive property) have no real reason to lie to me...

plus their house is on the internet at 750k ONO right now...

Freinds of mine bought their london place (Wimbledon) in April 2006 - 1.5 years off peak - for 500k.

In that time, they had it repainted internally, put in a new family bathroom, new front door and installed some nice blinds in the rooms the front. Total cost of improvements? less than 15k.

It's just gone under offer at 730k. Thats a 43% profit during a 'house price crash'.

    Go figure.

    lets have a link then.

Yes and the economy is only going one way, its not up.

It doesn't seem to be going down either, we appear to be bumping along on the bottom. HSW was right when he said the housing market reflecting the wider economy. Both are stagnant.

For some reason I find I am reluctant to post it...I'm not sure why but it feels like an invasion of their privacy.

I realise that sounds weak however so, once they have moved I will provide a link to the Zoopla site showing the change in sold prices over time.

Interstingly a quick check there shows I got it wrong and they moved in spring 2007 not 2006 - so they basically bought at peak!

Seems to me that this sort of anecdotal information posted on an anonymous internet forum is not worth the paper it isn't written on.

I'm not really sure why people are compelled to do it, TBH, except perhaps as a wind up/joke. In conversation with pals, you can mention anecdotal information as 'evidence' to back up your discussion because your pals trust you and also because there is a chance that they might even know (or know of) the people in the anecdote.

This is patently not the case on an anonymous forum, so the device of bringing in an anecdotal to back up your argument is pointless because nobody knows/trusts the poster and nobody knows the person anecdoted.

Can't disagree with any of that.

However, I can only wished to provide a counterpoint (whether you believe me or not) to the constant refrain of the doom & gloomers.

I would add that I myself am surprised. Seemed highly unlikely they would get an offer at anything like asking price but there you go!
