In the last year my gas and leccy bills have doubled!!

I am a single parent, living in a 3 bed house. I work so am only at home evenings and weekends. I joined EON last July I believe because they told their gas and electric was the cheapest and in turned saved me money. Which was great. I was only paying around £70 a month. I have just receieved my bill and they are putting up my monthly DD which was originallly about £80, then changed to £119 and is now £154!!! How is this right? I would have thought it being the summer I would have saved money but their money has slowly crept up and up over the year I've been with them. I'm very upset as this is the largest bill I have (more than my council tax!!!) and I just cannot afford £154 a month :( Things are tight enough as it is, and come September I'm going to be a poor penniless university student. Any advice welcome

Who was it who told you your bills would be lower if you switched to Eon ?

If it was a salesperson operating inside a store, on the street or a doorstep/phone caller, the truth is that these people will tell you anything to earn commission on the people they sign up.
However if you can prove Eon are more expensive than your old supplier by comparing prices on your old bills, you can make a written Complaint to Eon for redress

The first thing you need to do is ignore your monthly DD and look at you actual consumption. Look at the last year with you previous supplier and see the annual total kwh for gas and elec. Do the same for your first year with Eon and see if there is much difference. Lots of sales people will always quote a low DD to hook you.

Ah, so perfectly capable of understanding difficult concepts.:)

I agree with the post about annual consumption but would go further. Energy is not sold by the poond or the DD by by the meter reading.

You need to post meter readings to get meaningful help.

    Hi petrus82

Make sure your bills are based on accurate meter readings and not estimates. If estimated, give us a call with up to date readings. We'll re-bill your account to these and review the payment arrangement.

Has your account been estimated previously and now billed up to date to actual readings? If it has, you may have received a catch up bill. This could have caused the hike.

Is there any debt on the account? If there is, it will have been included in the payment arrangement and spread over a period of time. Ask for this to be spread over a longer period. This will reduce the monthly payments a bit.

As you've been with us for about a year, details of your usage will be on one of your bills. It'll be under the heading 'Key Facts.'

Use this to make sure you're on the best tariff, either with us or one of the other suppliers. Pop the usage in kWh on to one of the comparison sites. This will list your options, both with us and the others.

As spiro says, see how your current consumption compares with the previous 12 months. If it's similar and you were told we would be a lot cheaper than you may well have a case to complain. Details of how to do this are on your bills and our website.

If it's significantly more, then it may just be a case of using more plus the effects of the price increase last September.

Should the usage be going up then we can help with this too. Have a chat with our Energy Efficiency team. Tell them about your property and appliances. They specialise in helping customers cut back and will be happy to help.

There's more info about saving energy on our website. The Interactive House and 100 ways to save are particularly useful.

Hope this helps point you in the right direction petrus82. Give me a shout if you need any more info as will be happy to help.

Don't become a University Student then, surely making yourself penniless isnt the most MSE savvy step given your financial standing...

I was with E on and they wanted to increase my payments to over £100,from £80. And i was well in credit at the time..Told them where to get off. Closed my account when my tie in expired, they ended up owing me over £100..This was 2 years ago,I am only paying £70 a month now.
Make sure they have accurate readings at all times.
