Depends what the car is and if you care about the engine.

Wilco 10W40 semi-synth meets the required specs for most cars. I use it in my merc. Around £14 for 5 litres.0

depends what make/model and specific oil requirement for your engine. I bought some VW 505.1 stuff for the PD engine for £12.50/5 litres which was a steal.
Keep an eye out on ebay as some folk change their cars and just want rid of excess for peanuts..0 -
Depends what it takes. National Tyres will change your oil and filter for about £30 (£40 or £50 if it needs special fully synth) so hardly worth doing it yourself....0
