JSA and dental treatment

Hi,

I had a check up a few weeks ago and found out I needed a filling from my NHS dentist.

Last week I applied for JSA, so I would get the treatment for free.

My question is because I booked the appointment before I got JSA, would the treatment still be free?

Also, if it is free would I have to have a 'silver' filling, and not a white one like my other filling, which was done on the NHS?

Thanks :)

PS- I am going on holiday in four weeks. What do I say to the Job Centre? Thanks again :)

  • its not the date that you made the appt that matters but the date you have the treatment,as for the colour of the filling its still nhs even if you dont pay

Note that you only get dental treatment free if you are getting income-based JSA, not if you are getting contributions based JSA.
  • You are only entitled to JSA if you are available for and actively seeking work.

You tell them you are going on holiday!!!
Skint but Debt Free at Last :T
  • If you are going abroad on holiday you will have to sign off from JSA as you are not active seeking employment or able to attend an interview while abroad. This means you will receive no JSA, HB or CTB while you are on holiday. I know cos I've asked already.
If you are taking a holiday in the UK you can still claim as long as you still job hunt and advise you will be able to come back within 48 hours for an interview.
As to the filling thing I think you only get the cheapest type of fillings on the NHS, so in this case the silver ones, Now you are on the dole and spending other peoples money, beggars can't be choosers!

If you're on the contribution based JSA you may be able to get a certificate through the NHS Low Income Scheme to cover some or all of the costs of your dental treatment. I think it's a HC2 or HC3 certificate. I don't know much about it though someone else might!

    So to sum up:
    • You only get free dental treatment if you are claiming income based Job Seekers Allowance
    • You have to be seeking work
    • You have to tell them you are off on your hols - you may need to sign off and on again, but will need to be guided by the DWP in this respect
    • Your dental treatment will be basic and therefore you will be given an amalgam filling (silver)
You must be seriously hard up if you're jumping through all these hoops for the sake of the price of a filling!

I was at the dentist yesterday for a filling and was on JSA when I started the course of treatment. I was told you can have a free white filling in the front teeth on the NHS, but if you need a filling elsewhere in the mouth, it's silver for free or you can pay for a white one.
Public appearances now involve clothing. Sorry, it's part of my bail conditions.
