Hi, how did the operation go? Was it successful0

Hi Antnshell,
Apparently he is still quite dopey from the op and pain killers. I don't think I'll know for a few days as they want to keep him quiet. His spinal chord is bruised, but they seem positive about him. So I have my fingers crossed. It's hard because I can't visit him as he's too far away. If he was local I'd be up every day he means the world to me. Thanks for asking about him.0 -
Nice to see that the cruel and thoughtless jibe has now been removed from the thread. Thank you Forum Mods!
Sarah - hope your lovely dog makes a quick and full recovery. x0 -
About a year ago I was trying to find some financial assistance for an operation for my very much loved dog who needed a cataract operation.
While I was doing my research I heard about these people.

So sorry to hear the trouble the lady above has had re sorting out the vets bill. Yesterday we were told by the vet that our 4 yr old Alaskan Malamute needs a hip replacement as bone not formed properly when born. This is going to cost about £5k unfortunately we are only insured for up to £3k so credit card for the rest. Then we had another bombshell she also needs the other one doing at £5k, god knows how we are going to afford this. We only have one wage earner albeit a pretty gd salary. But husband lost his job 4 x in 10 yrs before the problems happened in the financial climate. So we are still paying back that debt. Plus the school system let down our eldest BIG time, so she plays a sport that needs to be supported by us. Financially we are being crippled by all this debt. I wouldn't mind but we don't live a life of luxury and buy things on a whim. Everything is only ever replaced when broken and if we can afford it. We now have the dilemma do we put our faithful loving family member to sleep or do we go further in debt.0

My heart goes out to both of you. My dog means everything to me so I really know how you feel.
Have you both told the vets involved that the insurance will not cover the costs? I say this because I know that some vets will charge more if they think that the insurance is covering the costs. Like when cars have to be fixed after an accident, they often quote more if its being paid for by insurance.
My friend used to self insure her dog - ie, put money in a seperate bank account each week to cover vet's bills instead of insurance - can't actually say that I would recommend this, as these days vet's bills tend to be so expensive, and even she has now insured her current dog. Anyway, when her dog needed tests and treatment for Chrohn's(sp?) disease, she explained to the vets that she wasn't insured and couldn't afford what they were quoting. They went through the things that they had quoted for and some of the things that were on the list were able to be knocked off. She got the bill down from over £300 to just over £100.
Just a thought. Hope they both are ok.0 -
Fingers crossed for you. MY GFs collie had this recently and within a week he was back up and jumping around: although I realise his was very much the exception to the rule and he has amazed the vets!
The Bill was IRO £2000 even then with a max per condition of £3500, we were just so pleased to have him back after a few fraught worrying days.
Ignore those people who have no compassion for animals: they usually have even less for themselves and guess what? no one cares about them either!Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.
If you don't like my opinion feel free to respond with your own.0 -
I do wonder how vet operations are so expensive tbh.
Hip operations for £10k  I can understand 2 - 3 k but 10 ? How on earth do they think people can pay this when pet insurance covers only a portion of the costs.
I wish you all the very best with your dogs. x:beer:0
