Car Insurance Help

Hi
A few weeks ago i wrote off my car (VW Polo 09reg 70bhp). As i hated public transport with a passion i decided to buy a new one. I managed to find one i liked (VW Golf TSI GT 160bhp) and contacted my insurance company to find out how much it would cost for the car to be added onto my policy. I was given a quote of £17, i thought that was a good deal, i had 6 months left on my policy so a few days later i purchased the vehicle. When i rang my insurance company again i was told the price was not £17 but £2000. When i asked why i was told the first price was incorrect due to a system error and that £2000 was the correct amount as the car was deemed as "higher risk"....I was absolutely fuming!!
After waiting several minutes on the phone for the customer services agent to speak with his manager and other departments i was told that they would not budge on the price. I was only offered £100 compensation if i decide to go to another insurance company.
Is there anything i can do legally or any other way?? I cannot afford £2000 and I've tried looking around for other insurance quotes only to be given ridiculously high quotes.
