Hey guys,

I'm looking at becoming and electrician, is it worth doing a course like this or is it a scam. will i benefit from it if I wanted to be self employed?

EBO BASIC DOMESTIC INSTALLERS SCHEME
Basic Domestic Installers Course:
For new entrants into the industry or those with limited experience we offer a five-week intensive course, it will teach you both the theory and practical aspects of how to carry out domestic installations and to safely test and certify your own work within current regulations. Our course includes the City and Guilds 2382 (17th Edition Wiring Regulations) and 2377 Portable Appliance Testing, which are both level 3 qualifications. To compliment these qualifications we include practical training and assessment, which will allow successful candidates to work within the Electro-technical industry with the skills and knowledge gained or progress to become fully qualified or apply to register with a Part P registration body as a defined scope electrician.

Cheers,

If it is anything like the fast track gas courses then forget it.

The only ones to make money are these 'training centres' and I use the term very loosely.

Don't believe all the hype about a shortage of electricians etc etc. There isn't, in fact there are too many for the amount of work around.

Sorry to be so negative in my reply, but I would hate you to waste all this money, with false hope at the end.

Do not bother with the fast track courses they are a load of tosh.

http://www.electriciansforums.co.uk - good start to get info.

Imo, try and find a sparky and see if you can come out with him for some days just to get a feeler of what its like to be one. most of my engineers are ex-sparky's and told me it can be awesome job but sometimes one of the worst jobs going...

I work at a gas training centre, we previously did this course but have stopped running it due to changes in the electricity regulations....to be perfectly honest...this is dangerously too easy. The worst candidates we have through our place....and the ones that are most dangerous to themselves and others, are ones that have done fast track courses with zero on the job experience. These do not offer you the experience or knowledge in 5 weeks to classify yourself as competant. These courses put massive risks on decent centres and the safety of everyone it qualifies.

As the above poster said, go out, get experience with someone first...and I dont mean a week or 2...go out for at least 6 months. Get the general feel for the job. I would highly recommend if you really wanted to do it, do volunteering for experience and this course but NOT the intensive version. Do the one that is more spred out over time, this gives you time to go out....find faults and ask questions rather than bombing through the paperwork all in one go.
You will find you are much more employable...and safe with the experience than just this qualification alone.

...just to add..not all training centres are the same..we would not put through anyone on a fast track course unless they had relevant experience. It is far too dangerous. We have seen first hand the fall out from other centres and colleges offering these fast track and it can be shocking how little the candidates know...yet are qualified to do. It is just wrong and these courses need to be shut down and quickly.
