After the Census was conducted, 1% of postcodes were assessed in something called the 'Census Coverage Survey', where every household in selected postcodes was first mapped (ie didn't just go off a printed list from Royal Mail etc) and then asked to fill in a mini-census. The info from this was used to validate the info in obtained in the main Census (number of households, people per household, ages etc). So the data should take people who weren't captured for whatever reason into account.

What I was referring to was "unnoficial" population.

I was once showing off my flat for a potential tenant a number of years ago.

The potential tenant was coming from Iran or Iraq and was going to receive 6 months oil & gas training (mainly drilling I believe).

He came with a friend who was interpreting as the potential tenant could not speak English.

It was a 2 bed furnished flat and I was asked if I could put 7 more beds into the property so that his "family" could come stay.

One of the flags raised in my head was how could he receive training in the UK if he couldn't speak English.

I was therefore wary of the place being sub-letted so didn't proceed with that tenant.

Meanwhile here is the fastest growing local authority in the UK proposing to demolish some of the 500,000 units per year built in the 1960s.

Good point in that we have been focussing on new properties and not considering those taken out of the supply.

I'm also wary of directly mapping population increase to increased housing demand.

We have had a massive level of immigration over the last decade, and it will take time for the full effects to work through.

Some cultural changes will be inevitable. Some groups are more comfortable with a larger number of household members. During my student years I worked at a textile mill in Rochdale. The concept of bed swapping was well known with the workers - it was commonplace.

I still think we will see multi generational family living encouraged. Grandparents supported by the family in annexes or the household. This may not be a bad thing in the social context of things. Will we also see an increase in single lodgers being taken on to cover household bills?
