Insurance - change of car

I pick up a new car this week and need to arrange insurance. My existing annual policy (paid monthly) is due for renewal in mid-August. My current insurers charge a £35 fee for changes plus whatever extra premium the new car will incur (higher group) or £55 to cancel the policy. Chances are I'll be changing policy in August in any case because last year, I ended up taking out a new policy online (with the same company, as they couldn't match the online price as a renewal bizarrely).

So, given that I only have one £17 monthly payment to make on this policy, would there be any reason not to just take out a new policy for the new car now and leave the old one on my old car (which I'm trading in) to expire?

Im in exactly the same situation and plan to just buy a new policy and let the old one elapse. Plus, if you get the new car before the old one, and need to sell the old one privately, you will at least still have some insurance whilst you sell it, rather than having to possible pay for temporary insurance too.

make sure the old policy isn't one that auto renews.

Good point. Can't use my (full protected) NCB on two policies at the same time, can I?
