Moving to South Manchester- commuting?

Thinking of moving from Wirral for a job in South Manchester. The job is in Macclesfield/ Bollington area and as I'm essentially a city girl I don't want to live anywhere too far away from Manc city centre. I have heard that Chorton might be up my street, but what would the commute be like from there to Bollington? Roughly half an hour? Would love to hear from anybody with other ideas. Rough description of me: Sociable gig lover who loves music, museums and quality restaurants but also loves beautiful countryside and long walks. I have a car, which makes things a bit easier.
Many thanks in advance guys!

It's a pig of a commute. Lots of traffic - theoretically half an hour I suppose but you could be talking a lot longer than that. You should probably think about Burnage / Heaton Mersey / Didsbury.
Depending on where it is you may be better off with the train.
Chorlton is lovely but expensive. Burnage and Heaton Mersey are cheaper but not as nice. Didsbury is mostly ridiculously pricey.0 -
Thanks for the reply! I'm generally looking to pay no more than £400 per month. Didsbury looks nice too, commute equally hellish from there? One thing is for sure, gonna be doing a lot of researching over the next week! thanks again!0

From what you claim to be in to I would pick Chorlton over Didsbury (I live in Chorlton and work in Didsbury). Didsbury is full of chain restaurants, Slug & Lettuce, GBK, Zizzi, Cafe Rouge whereas Chorlton has more independent (not necessarily better but definitely more interesting) places to eat.
Also Didsbury doesn't really have a music scene whereas Chorlton has a number of bars that put gigs on. Both have areas to walk in although Chorlton Ees is more expansive than any of the parks in Didsbury.
In essence Chorlton is more hippy/bohemian (there is a vegan supermarket) but Didsbury is more classy. Chorlton also has a tram line into town which makes getting in Manchester city centre very easy - the tram will extend into Didsbury next summer as well.
Will take longer to commute from Chorlton though.0 -
I think you'd be better off looking at Stockport. Places like Chorlton are just so over rated and my perception is that the crime rate is higher given many of the surrounding areas.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

West Didsbury has loads of independent places, Burton Road especially. I agree about Didsbury Village though.
Also you are right on the riverbank for excellent walks, its not all about the parks.0 -
chorolton has a large student population like withington, didsbury and fallowfield which is great if you are at uni but expensive if not.
As you move out of manchester towards Macc you come across Wilmslow and Alderley edge and need deep pockets to rent there.
So either rent in macc itself or look at the heaton mersey area , gatley, cheadle0 -
I'm in Altrincham/Hale and we rent, handy for Bollington/Macc as well xx'' Ok Marge, if anyone asks, you require 24-hour nursing care; Lisa's a clergyman; Maggie is seven people and Bart was wounded in Vietnam ''0

Agreed, West Didsbury is nice although it lacks a big supermarket and any banks0 -

These replies are all fantastic and very helpful! Thanks! If I wanted to get a train from Chorlton to Macc, would that be relatively painless?0
