You have to have your own insurance to drive a vehicle. You wont be covered on someone elses policy unless they name you specifically.

Especially as your a new driver and a high risk.

I think you may find £2000 may not cover the cost of 1 years insurance.

So if you want to buy a car privately you cannot test drive until you sort insurance out.

A garage will have cover on their policy.

One garage gave me the keys and his trade plates, I think he wanted me to steal it :)

My budget for the car is £2k, my insurance budget is £1,200.00 whick is fine. I've gotton quotes for all the makes/models I'm interested in & £1,200.00 is plenty.
  • Do you know anyone who is "car savvy"? (Relative, friend etc - preferably someone's who's a mechanic, knows what to look for on engines etc)

If so, take them along - and I'd say a def need if you're buying privately as you've no comeback at all!

If not, have a look at some reputable garages - often they take older cars as part exchange & they usually go to auction. You might be lucky & get something - but the guarantee on a car of that age is unlikely to be very long.

Agree with the others - you won't be able to test drive a privately owned car. As others have said, my policy covers me to drive any car (but only 3rd party) but doesn't cover anyone to drive mine.

ETA good luck for your test .....
