if a school is in a relatively 'poor' area, then it is obvious that it will only be anle to afford to pay bursaries to thos on the very lowest incomes, otherwise they wouldnt have money to pay for teachers!

I am in receipt of benefits and have a 16 year old for whom I receive DLA due to his special needs. After a long struggle, he's done very well in school and is due to go to sixth form. He has Aspergers and Dyspraxia and travelling outside the home is problematic for him. I thought he'd come under one of the vulnerable groups and would receive a bursary to enable me to accompany him to sixth form each day.

Apparently not. I had a meeting with the sixth form co-ordinator. As he has problems writing I have to provide him with a laptop because they can't guarantee he will be provided with one in school. And I need to pay for his fares (£50 each for him and me a month) and school meals.

I had to take my younger son to school for a few months until we obtained a place at a local school so I know how much I struggled to find the £100 a month for travel passes (no child fares before 9am here and it was two buses).

I was shocked to be told that the school gave a bursary to every student in sixth form.., but it was £100 a term only. They said that all the students were of the 'discretionary' group so what happened to the governements message that the 'new' bursary would be only a little less than the EMA? I was told that the school do take some money out to meet their needs but if they can't provide a laptop to a boy who has severe challenges writing (but is very intelligent).., what are these needs? How is £100 a term only slightly less than £30 a week formerly given with EMA?

I don't know if there's anything I can do. I do get DLA but I am already using this to top up rent to enable my older son to have his own bedroom (really really necessary). I really struggled last year and there were times I pulled my hair out trying to get the money together for fares to get my younger son to his school. I'm not looking forward to a repeat of this. The school is three miles away so its a bit far to walk, particularly given my older son's needs.
