Problems with uninstalling McAfee

I have a Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop, which came equipped with a McAfee anti-virus and security centre. Since I don't want to continue using this, I have tried to uninstall the Security Centre and anti-virus programmes using the Add or Remove Programmes section in the Windows XP Control Panel. However, it tells me I have to uninstall all McAfee Services first and that the anti-virus cannot be uninstalled because it is still running. I have looked everywhere possible to find ways of complying with these requests, but nothing obvious springs to mind! How on earth can I get rid of this damn programme, which spues out endless popups and slows down start up? I always use Norton, which is a breeze to uninstall if you have to. Why has McAfee made it so difficult to quit their programme? Is is cynical to speculate that Dell and McAfee deliberately make it so in order to make you re-subscribe?

McAfee products can be a pain to uninstall. In some cases your only resort is to manually uninstall it, removing entries from the registry and deleting files/folders.
Try the McAfee Help forum (http://forums.mcafeehelp.com), go to the section relevant to the product installed and search for the issue(s) you have.0 -
I had loads of problems with computer crashes which I found out were caused by McAfee, but only after I called in expert help. My computer bod deleted all the McAfee files, a lot of them manually in the end, and installed Norton and I've had no problems with the pc since. I then bought a laptop, tried installing Norton on that, that got mixed up with the antivirus stuff preloaded on the laptop and caused the laptop to lock up completely. Back came Mr computer bod (at £47 per hour inc VAT) and unscrewed that one as well.
