9ct gold back and front

This may not quite be the right place for this question but after staring at the sub forums for about five minutes, i wasn't sure which one to put this question in!!

Basically i was wondering if anyone has experience of wearing something that is gold plated or 'gold back and front' in the form of a necklace locket in the shower?

Has it got majorly damaged? I can imagine it's probably not advisable but i was just curious if anyone has ruined none solid gold jewellery by doing this?? What happened? Did it erode?

I'm looking at something that has been hallmarked 9ct back and front but would like MSE opinions before i splurge as i am one to not take my necklace off at night and also shower without taking earrings/necklaces off. (although they are solid gold)

I don't understand the 'back and front' bit of your post but I have a 9ct thin chain and pendant I wear most of the time. I've had it on for about 9 months non-stop now and it looks fine.

It isn't a phrase that a shop is legally allowed to use anymore.
They mean it is gold plated.

The OP is asking if water will get under the plating and corrode the base metal (i assume?)

The answer to that i don't know as, i'd assume, it depends on what the base metal under the gold is.

It's on ebay and as it's a pendant that is extremely old it does have the hallmark stamp saying back and front. I'm just worried it would easily damage but i really do like it. I've never seen a cameo heart locket before.

I had a watch which was 9ct gold plated. I must have worn it almost every day for 12 years and it was absolutly fine untill I took it off before I got in a bath one night and left it on the tiled window ledge. I forgot about it untill the next day and then when I went to find it it was sitting in a bit of a puddle (condensation from the previous night's bath I guess) and had lost the gold plate where it was touching the surface beneath it. It made a horrible mess on the window ledge too!

So yes I would say it's fine, but it probably will lose its gold coating over time and don't leave it in a puddle overnight or it'll happen sooner!

You can always take it to a jeweler to get it re-plated if you need to in the future
