Notice given but 2 months rent upfront

  • Thank for the advice so far. I managed to stop the direct debit but have an email from them now asking to pay the months rent. I'm going to respond saying if I've paid 2 months up front at the start, why do I need to pay for the last month.

    Cheers.

The agent is trying to pull a fast one and sidestep deposit protection legislation. DO NOT PAY. If you do I would be willing to bet you never see that extra months rent. LL/LA would have no choice but to take you to court if they believe they are owed rent after you move out but from the way you describe it they would get nowhere with judge.
Which is worse - ignorance or indifference?
Personally I don't know and don't care

I also wouldn't pay the extra £100 as they have accepted £600 as a months payment, and confirmed it was indeed taken to cover 2 months rent.

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to write to them requesting a rent statement. Need to be sure I definitely did pay rent for month 2 after paying the initial 2 months up front.

I would request your bank statements from your old bank too. I would rather be in control of the decisions. There is nothing to stop them saying you didnt with no proof.
