Pay for spybot you mean? I didn't have to pay but it would only fix 20 problems, more than that and I'd have to pay.

Spybot finds loads of cookies (which arent exactly malicious)... other AS software dont find as much seeing as they're not too important in comparison to other files, so cookies are at the bottom of the list... thats why it looks like there's a massive difference in detection rates, but not too much of a diffrence in security rates. I would have thought having WD as well as SpybotS&D will be alright (although i prefer AVG-AntiSpyware and SuperAntiSpyware)

I wouldn't get too worried over these numbers that the spyware scanners push out.. although they may be malicious, when you have hundreds or even 10's of items found, and no noticeable impact on the PC, the numbers are likely to be overstated, either by double counting, harmless MRU entries, or counting a tracking cookie as a malicious object which it is not. It's marketing.

To stop tracking cookies getting on your PC in the first place..

IE, tools, internet options, privacy, advanced, and tick block third part cookies, and OK. When you do malware scans, many products highlight and delete these cookies, this will stop them before they get to your PC..
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Remember if you stop tracking cookies, you won't be able to use sites like Quidco or Rpoints.

Thanks to you all for replying, last night I installed AVG ant-spyware. I must re-install avg antivirus too , never seemed to have a problem with that. although I was blissfully unaware of anything till that spybot thingy threw up four hundred odd:eek::D. Most of them are still there hopefully doing no harm.

I must visit here more often and learn about this stuff, I suppose just enjoying your computer and leaving it to it's own devices can be dangerous:D
