Would a wood burner go here?

I do intend getting someone to look properly but could anyone in the know comment please? A 25 year old semi with a brick chimney stack and chimney breast inside. It did have a gas fire with back boiler now removed. What might be the issues of putting in a wood burner?

It's certainly possible to fit a wood burner into a fireplace, provided it's big enough.

If you're going for a freestanding stove, then you need a few inches clearance all round to let the air circulate. There are also slot-in "cassette" stoves which can slide into a suitable space (a bit like fitted kitchen appliances), but you'd need to ensure that the hole is just the right size.

You need to measure how high, wide and deep the fireplace is to see what size of stove would fit.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • I wouldn't be without mine but the laws relating to installation have tightened up considerably in the last few years. You're required to have a CO monitor now and the installation performed by a competent installer. A notice plate is now also required giving details of the installation. It sounds like you have a Class 1 chimney which is ideal for a woodburning stove, though I'd recommend a multifuel stove which although it makes your wood burn away quicker can burn anything.
