Just wondered if any one uses fuel cards? The boss is thinking of setting them up for the sales staff, do they really save you money?

In a way...they save on administration. You don't need to keep any of the fuel receipts which saves money indirectly. The company gets one invoice every month covering everybody's fuel use and pays that. It's much easier than having employees fill in expenses reports and submit the receipts then cross checking...etc..etc...
You still need to keep a mileage diary to split personal and company use of the fuel and you then need to reimburse the company for your private use of the fuel.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Depends how much fuel you buy.
My old firm used to buy a large quantity and then the pump price doesnt matter.
You just draw off from your own stock.
But they spent many thousands at a time.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
It's good for the employees as they don't have to pay out of their own pocket for fuel and then reclaim it back on expenses.0

But you do pay income tax on a fuel card if you don't pay for private mileage, for me it's worth paying the tax not to have to log every journey. Also we have such an awkward to use expenses system I would be well out of pocket if I had to pay for 3 x fill ups a week on the credit card, I miss the cash back though!0

A mate of mine works at MF Oils. When we saw him this weekend he was talking about how good they are if you are spending a lot of money on fuel, so it might be worth checking out https://www.mfoils.co.uk0

Thanks all. I've passed on some of your comments to the boss. Its given us a couple of things to think about. I think we are going to go for it. I expect the sales guys will be happy as a couple of them have been asking for them to be put in place for a while0

Fuel cards were a useful tool for companies to reduce theft and keep their fuel bills under control. Now, with friendy local garages willing to be slack on what goes into which car (some of them apparently run on mars bars too) and put all purchases through one channel and fuel card companies taking the mickey with their elastic fuel prices, I'd advise any business to stay clear and rely on good old hard refundable receipts.0
