Topping up phone at cashpoint

You can top up phones at ATMs.

If I use my credit card will it count as a purchase or as me taking out cash from the ATM and using that to top up the phone (and hence incur interest)

I want to top up someone elses phone thats why I am not just dialling the topup number from my phone and doing it that way.

I suspect you will find that mobile phone top up is not available at an ATM when using a credit card - Nationwide specifically say it is not possible, and Barclays only mention using debit cards.

I believe the top up facility is provided by LINK (UK ATM Network) and any transaction that goes through it will be classed as a cash withdrawal whether the ATM will let you do it or not.

Simplest solution would be to go into any store offering top ups and buy a top up voucher, pay using the credit card (which would be treated as a purchase) then text the code to the persons phone and let them top it up or call the top up line and choose the option for topping up someone else's phone
