strange.. father stays in a hotel. Leaves his Barclaycard in room, goes ot dinner. Receptionist comes up to him. She has a phone call for him, caller asked for him by name and room No. Caller says they are from Barclaycard ad that his card has been stolen and used (in his home town) to purchase goods on Amazon. £600. Was it him ? No he says. Goes to room, card gone. Receptionist says No was withheld. Goes to Barclays. Barclaycard have not rung him and card has not been used (anywhere).
??
Card must have been taken from room (hotel E'ee ?), therefore they knew his room No and where he was.
WHY on earth would someone steal a card, not use it, ring the owner, say they had used it, and gain nothing from the whole episode ?? Card is cancelled and replaced.

Presumably the person phoning was trying to get some security related info (password/dob etc?) so they could make a purchase??

They were trying to get the pin number I suspect, another common scam is for someone to steal someone's handbag with wallet and phone and then text everyone on the phone's contact list saying it's the owner of the phone and can they remind them what their pin number is.

Its also common for the caller to ask if the card owner (father) can prove whether or not he has the card, as to whether the transactions have been made from a clone of the card, or the card itself which has been lost. They will ask for the CV2 code of the back of the card (the last 3 digits of the code on the security strip) to verify the owner has the card. So if the card has previously been cloned, the baddies (couldn't think of a better word!) now have all they need for online transactions.

EDIT: Just read it all back again. They HAD stolen his card, so he obvioulsy wouldn't be able to tell them the CV2 number. Ah well, at least I tried to help!

I remember a few years ago when I happened to go shopping with my mother and she shouted across the store "xxx, whats my PIN number?". After trying to tell her without everyone hearing, she proceeded to say aloud each digit as she pressed the buttons.

Needless to say, we had to change the PIN afterwards.

Now I think she just pays with cash.

My wife once texted me asking what her pin number was. I texted back the answer...

    I wish.

I use my CC online so often that I know the CV2 number off by heart.

But I would never give it to anyone on the phone unless I RANG THEM to buy something.
