What herbs or veg or both shall I grow?

Hi Folks,

The subject is quite simple, what shall I grow?

Let me tell you about my circumstances, currently living on the top floor of maisonette styled house, not a big block or anything like that, just upstairs (us) and downstairs (lovely neighbour).

Any thoughts or ideas as to what might be suitable?

;)

I think the greenfingered forum will have more ideas. Have you searched there?

I currently have basil and thyme doing well on the windowsill. I think chives would work, too. And, as JackieO says, good ol' mustard'n'cress.

I've successfully grown Peppers on a windowsill - just treated them like a houseplant. I am told tomatoes will grow there too if you dont mind the huge pot!

    Hi Wood.Justin,

You should get more help with your query on our Greenfingered board so I've moved your thread over there.

Well, it depends what you eat! I have grown tomatoes and peppers on eindowsills, great fun, but .....i might not have thought so if i were home a lot during day light hours. They blocked all the sun out!

Something i use a lot both as a herb and as a salad green is flat leaf parsely. Likewise coriander. Cut and come again lettuces are good mainly because they taste so much better fresh, lettuces.

What you grow will depend on what you eat and what your space is. ( which way it faces etc.)

What do you eat and use?

I have a balcony and kitchen windowsill and things that are doing well for me are peppers and chillies (on the window sill), mixed salad leaves (easy, quick to grow and saves a lot of money!), cucumbers and tomatoes on the balcony along with some herbs I like fresh and use regularly (rosemary, two sorts of thyme and chives).

I tried strawberries too but they didn't take to life on a windy balcony!
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!
