How do I get the most for my money!

Hello i was wondering if anyone could give me any good bargain hunting ideas.

My son is 4 in May and myself and husband are really struggling for cash, We can only afford to spend about £40 no his birthday for everything.

We dont have anyone else who will get him anything, execpt two grannies who will probable get him a card with £5 in it.

As he is at nursery he wants the expensive toys that his friends have, if i dont this then i can only get him one or two toys.

Can anyone give me any ideas on how to spread this money out and bargains or discount codes would be great for birthday ideas (online please, as my husband is disabled and we dont have a car so getting to the shops is a nightmare!

Many thanks for any help provided!

Do you know what he wants for his Birthday or what is he in too! i.e cars soldiers etc,. You can often by things much cheaper on the internet. eg. when my daughter wanted some cube world which are £19 in the shops. They were £12 on amazon (at christmas) it well worth shopping around on the internet. Amazon is a good place to start if you can spend over 15 and get there free delivery option.

could you perhaps get him some bits from car boot sales - toys are often going cheap. You probably wouldnt get recent stuff but you could pick up cars/books etc whatever little boys like.

Also browse the argos clearance section- sometimes there is some good bargins still in stock

You could also put an ad on your local freecycle website. you never know what people will part with for free. Over the years i have bought my sons really expensive things which they have never played with. its usually the traditional things that they love doing or playing with (colouring, making things, painting) etc. Also have a look on the amazon clearance section they sometimes have good bargains on there.
At 4 years old he doesnt know how much things cost just that mum and dad are there to share his birthday. You could make it really special by having a special birthday tea for him. This doesnt have to cost a lot, if you go over to the old style board there are loads of cheap ideas on there for birthdays.
You could also start to have a look round your town the £1 shop (if you have one) sometimes has some good things in there for yes £1.00 Good look. This site has made me realise that you dont have to spend a fortune to made up good pressies.

  • Thanks for all the ideas, i dont really think he knows what he wants, everything that comes on a tv advert he always declares i want that for my birthday, (this has been going on for about 6 months!).

I would like to get him some board games, but a bit clueless to which are the best ones.

Does anyone know of any sites that have reviews of toys!
  • I don't know if you have much of a garden but you can get swings and swing sets really cheap. I think for a set if you shop around you can get one for £50 (your £40 plus 2 x £5).

Just a thought as he would get so much more 'play value' out of something like this than an expensive toy.

Also, my son is nearly 4 and loves his leappad (the one where you buy extra books). These are no more than £40 and you can always add to the book collection
    now mum of 4!!!

Thats kids for you isnt it everything they see they want. My two were just like that and yes we bought them everything, the result is a garage full of toys that they hardly played with. Im sure that by now you have an idea what your child is into. my first child it was cars and power rangers and he is 14 next they have been around for ages, so we bought him a garage and some cars and he was well pleased. Dont just buy him things because he see's them on tv buy them because you know he will play with them. Board games need to be simple at that age, maybe even educational. If you have any big supermarkets near you they usually do a cheaper version of a classic board game, eg snakes and ladders.

    Hi

If you register on the Early Learning Centre website they will send you vouchers for 20% off their full price stuff.

Have a look in the charity shops I've picked up some lovely jigsaws etc for not much money.

Poundland often has lots of cars etc

The Book People website is brilliant for childrens books although I think P&P is only free over £15 ish

We've also got a book shop near us called The Works that also has lots of cheaper childrens books.

Look in the back of the newspaper.

My little boy is six and he's only just getting into board games.

However my little boy always says he wants something he's seen on TV but 2 minutes later he's forgotten.

Is there anything he particularly likes doing with you that could be a special birthday treat ?

    I'm sure he'll have a lovely birthday !!
