A Brit amateur balloonist has pulled off two major achievements: getting his hands on a wallet-sized Raspberry Pi computer and then sending it heavenwards to 39,994m (131,200ft).
Over the weekend, Dave Akerman's PIE1 payload was carried aloft into the stratosphere under a latex meteorological balloon, sending back live webcam images - something which Dave notes "hasn't been done very often".

Oh dear, I think I've bricked mine. Was playing with XBMC, it stopped responding so I pulled te power out. Now it won't turn back on...

Edit: crisis over. I unplugged all connectors, replugged it all back in. It's now working ok... Now I need to figure out how to use my iPad as an xbmc control

Remember that the USB Ports do NOT provide the Normal 500mA current per port, only 100mA, so you need to be careful as sucking more current can reduce the voltage and hence stop the CPU starting properly.

Use a powered USB hub if you want to use power hungry peripherals, eg wireless, USB hard drives without external power, older keyboards and mice.

Get the kid a Pi, also take him to your nearest Raspberryjam event, it'll help get ideas on what people are doing with their Pi and help newbies etc... also an place to network, gain new friends/contacts which may help point him open up ideas on career direction.

    I have a Pi.

IMO its not all its cracked up to be.

It has problems because of its design, not all USB devices work on it, the fusing causes problems. not all SD cards work.

A case is expensive - between £9-15, a PSU £4, an SD card £7-10 then an external HDD id you want to use it as a media centre.

The board is designed IMO badly so it does not fit in simple plastic cases, they have to be 3d printer modeled or look pretty naff. Fits in a fag packet though.

Person who buys Raspberry Pi completely misses the entire point of it.
