Hi
My friend is in reciept of highrate dla and has asked me to become her carer. I was advised by benefits that I would recieve the equilavent of my friends SDP. I am currently in reciept of JSA, child tax credit, child benefit..I have 3 children and a partner. I have now looked into the situation(after applying for carers allowance) and as i understand it now my friend will be nearly 60 pounds a week worse off and I will gain 31 pounds. Does anyone know if this is correct or am i getting confused?
Thanks

That is correct I believe. I also believe that as a carer you cannot be compelled to take a full time job, but that may be wrong.
Maybe you need to put the information into a benefits calculator, or ring the benefits advice line
Good luck
Ooop reading it properly I see you have been told this by the benefits.0 -
Thanks..
... I wasnt sure if i was filling the benefits calculator in correctly, as currently my JSA has been stopped and am only getting my child tax credits and child benefit, I have put in claim for income support and carers and on doing the benefits calculator again it said that as a family we would be no better off and my friend would be 60 worse off..
..very confused.. :think:0 -
Also, as far as I know, SDP has now stopped for new claimants. So if she loses it because you get carer's allowance, she won't get it back again if you stop being her carer.
She is better off keeping her money as it is, and using it to pay you whatever you agree between you.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
I believe you may be thinking of severe disability allowance.zzzLazyDaisy wrote: »Also, as far as I know, SDP has now stopped for new claimants. So if she loses it because you get carer's.
This has been ended for new claimants, but is unrelated to the Severe Disablement Premium.
This is an increase in certain benefits for claimants that meet additonal criteria.
This continues.0
