Just a thought ...
What if one of these "£1" items that cost £15 to post goes missing? Wouldn't Royal Mail go by the eBay sale value when decidng how much compensation to pay out?0 -
Its the total that matters - but many go for the cheapest in total - and THEN ask for even more money back - knowing quite well the price was weighted on the postage to avoid fees. Fee avoidance may be wrong - but the buyer got it cheaper - so why do THEY moan????
The recent price rises mean small packets are now more than double what they were before. I recently gave reduced postage for 2 items - only to discover it was now cheaper to send both items seperately. There was no savings for posting together. I didn't pester the buyer for the extra back though.
Both items weighted 748g and were packets. Check it out on Royal mails calculator. Buyers will probably mark sellers down for no multiple item discount.0 -
I always look at the total and include postage in the price when I'm bidding and it makes no difference as I set a limit. But on a BIN item I don't get the item cheaper.
P&P often causes disputes however my original post was referring to how ebay seems to be becoming sloppier in general, I also referred to longer dispatch times and seller apathy toward ITR. I also read moans from sellers having problems with being paid and then hassled.
However if I pay decent p&p, particularly on a BIN I do expect the packet / parcel to arrive within a reasonable time and appropriate packing. And if I am overcharged at least 75% p&p then yes I do think it's reasonable for me to be disgruntled about it.

as a seller, it all seems a bit of a no win situation with p&p fees now! i tend to charge approx. 10-50p max over the postage charge in order to cover my packaging. i believe this is a pretty fair price and if you do not like it then you should not buy from me. however, i often, lately get poor p&p ratings off buyers even though i am charging them practically what it costs to send. so i think very often, people just do not realise how much it now costs to send a little parcel and they think £2+ must be ripping them off!
as i said a no win situation now! hey ho!!0 -
My response would be to charge fees on postage; that way, people would have no incentive to overcharge. They only do so now because it's free money - so make it not free. They do this in the US so it's not an unworkable solution by any means.
Fees are charged on postage by the disgusting PayPal system which charges commission on the whole amount, (including the postage element) that you receive. :mad:0 -

'disgusting' really?
I assume you have never run a business then and had to pay merchant fees for anything.
You do realise ebay and paypal are a business and not a charity. If you want to sell for free then use local freeads or Gumtree and stick with cash on collection.
Yes we all moan about the fees, I like a good whinge when I get my bills in- but I do think 'disgusting' is a tad over reacting.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. As a private seller, I would like to point out how long it takes to package the item, travel to the Post Office and queue to post it and get proof of posting. This may take half an hour out of my day. Time is money and this could therefore be worth well over a fiver. If I am posting an average of 3 items each time I think an extra £1.50 on each Ebay item, above the postal cost is reasonable! It is all related to the posting of the item after all.
Has anyone considered this reasoning?0 -

Yes this excuse has been considered by sellers trying to justify overcharging.
However, when you sit and think about it with reasonable sellers you will appreciate that it is nothing at all to do with your buyers where you choose to live or where you post office is. If you are running a business and need to account for your time then add it to the item cost. If you are selling private things then you don't need paying for your time. If you can't sell and make a profit give the stuff to a charity shop then you'll have that extra 30 mins a day for over time or leisure time instead.
When I buy I expect an item cost I can choose to buy at or not buy at and a post and packing charge. I do not expect to be paying petrol, bus fares or for a nice cup of latte on the way to the post office all added in as postage costs.
As a seller it is the easiest way to get your account suspended, and that is exactly what is currently happening to a colleague of mine ( see my thread about checking the expanded dashboard)I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. But if it's "costing" you so much to post something, isn't this something you should consider when deciding whether it's worth selling something.
If it's such in incovenience, why bother.
Most buyers don't consider these extra costs as something they should be expected to cover.0
