Cat peeing over edge of litter tray

The title says it all really.

Puss is 6 years old. Spent first year of her life in a flat, and since then been in a house - but she doesn't like going outside unless you go with her.

She has the same litter tray that she has always had from a kitten.

She has always been excellent with it, and even as a kitten she has not once EVER had an accident, sprayed etc.

Recently, she pees over the edge of her litter tray, and I can't work out why...and I'm sick and tired of cleaning up cat wee, especially as it runs in the gaps in the tiles and spreads for aaaaaages!!!

I've watched her and she does it because she squats with her bum hanging over the edge....but she does not do this for poos.

There is nothing around the tray that she is bumping in to that makes her overhang, I am home all the time so poo is taken out as and when it's done, tray has a full change and clean once a week.

Any ideas why she is doing this, and more importantly how to stop it? It's driving me crazy

  • Wouldn't it be easier to just get a covered tray?
  • Is it an uncovered tray?

If so, try a covered one - the wee will do onto the lid, but it's a lot easier to clean

Deeper sided tray, much larger tray or a covered tray. Most cost effective is an underbed storage box from Home Bargains or similar discount store - under £5. Also be sure to clean a large area around the tray with a urine removing product. If she has had the same plastic tray for six years it might be that which smells unpleasant to her too - either of urine or of your chosen cleaning product - cats have a far more sensitive nose than we do.

I'd say try a larger tray too. While she may not have grown much bigger, being older, she may just need a bit more room to play around with.
She might also have grown a bit more sensitive to her other wees in the tray and may be trying to wee away from those which is causing her to go over the edge.

I had the same problem OP (well my cat did!) and got a really high sided, covered, tray from Pets at Home - cured the problem straight away.

My old cat Kola used to do this. Was awful. I felt like a mad ol' cat woman whose house smelt of cat pee! Yuck. Despite newspaper underneath and regular mopping up, you just couldn't get rid of the smell sometimes.

As above, a high sided tray (or a tray within a tray) are the only real answers.

If you can't find a suitably high-sided tray, buy a plastic storage box. Make sure it's not too 'grooved' at the bottom though or you won't be able to clear it out properly. Something with quite a flat base.

    Good luck!

My cat can still pee over the edge of this tray! You don't realise until you suddenly discover the puddle beneath the tray :rotfl:
