Hello, I am here asking for an advice. I had a promotional code for £10 off ebay so decided to use it as it valid until 16 July. I bought some item and had to go through paypal. Accidentally I ended up in paypal account which I had with my ex-partner and I saw a balance of £290. I have not checked this paypal account for ages and it was on his name and he had a credit card connected to it. The address as "Home" was our address where we lived togather but under was my current address with my name near to it. Email address there is mine which is still valid. I am worried what does it mean Balance £290? We owed this money to paypal? Is it some sort of fee which is growing for having account? What it could be? There are no transactions showed apart from my todays when I used the £10 voucher. I dont really understand paypal so got quite worried when I saw this figure. Please could someone advise.

Balance £290 owing to them? Or a credit balance from where you have sold stuff but not claimed it?

Have no idea whether it's a credit or debit. Just says "Balance £290. There is no evidence of any transactions. We used to sell some stuff on ebay but it was 4 years ago. I am sure my ex withdrawned the money into his account but why it still showing as Balance £290? It's a Premier account but could be some fee for having an account?

It should be pretty clear if its a balance of £290 or a negative of -£290.

If its a negative - it will be down to a chargeback. If its in credit - its available to spend.

If it allowed you to buy something just now - then i'm pretty sure its in credit - as it would have made you pay off the debt before allowing you to proceed.

It's has no minus. Just £290.
I bought it with promotional £10 ebay voucher so did not use any balance.

It sounds like you're in a positive. If you get stuck with a negative balance due to a chargeback paypal generally won't let you do anything with your account.

Try going through to the withdraw - transfer to bank account option - this will tell you the amount of balance available for you to remove from the account and should help you to confirm whether positive or negative.

    STOP!

Before you try withdrawing, look at the transaction history. If you are sure you withdrew all funds and the transactions aren't yours, it is probably your ex-partner's money.

If you withdraw an ex-partner's money to your account, it will represent theft, which could land you in all kinds of trouble.

Agreed. Don't actually withdraw the money! But if you go through to those options it will give you a page before you confirm to show you the balance - this is what will give you the indication but will not withdraw the money unless you type in the amount you want to withdraw and confirm it (which obviously, you don't want to do!)

Doesnt matter - paypal would have suspended you.

Clearly its a balance - i don't think there would be any mistaking a negative - no doubt it would be in bright red or a message from paypal highlighted. Even if not - that is what the '-' negative sign was invented for.

So now what will you do with it? Whos bank account would a withdrawl go to? You can see all the past transactions if you want - just click on view all my transactions.
