  • So, vw called. Ignition coil £60 including labour so quotes on here are spot on. They suggested replacing all three at the same time which I declined, is this standard/ a good idea? I personally thought what's the point as ill just replace when it goes wrong, besides considering selling it now

If the rest of the car is ok, I would have the coil replaced and see how you get on.
Because one thing goes wrong doesn't mean everything else is on its way out.
  • I have a 07 polo which I've had for 3 yrs with one previous owner. I've done about 40k miles in those 3 years and have replaced tyres, brake pads/discs for wear and tear however a few months ago I took the car to kwik fit for MOT & service. All passed fine. The very next day I started to have problems where when the car is in lower gears, or idle, or reversing I lose power. Lots of dash board lights come on, nothing indicative of a specific issue. I went back to kwik fit as it seemed coincidental that I'd only started to have these issues after they'd had the car. The guy there looked over it for an hour asked lots of questions, plugged the computer to the car and found nothing. I left dismayed and have had this issue ever since. Some days worse than others and one i noticed the lights on the dash flickered on and off whilst driving at around 30 mph.... Not sure what it could be and I know if I go to vw it'll be costly, however I drive 50 mile round trips to work daily and have a child with me so need to be safe.
There have been random issues since with electric windows working on and off that may or may not be connected ...... I've looked and cannot see this as a common fault on any forums but at 55k miles on the clock, and unable to afford a new car I'd like some help pls?..
    Thanks
  • The diagnostic check, is actually to help the mechanic mend the car, charging for a "check" is a scam, you can buy a VAG com reader for £14 on e-bay that will give you the same result in 30 seconds.

Whilst people are reading this and talking of coils, here is a money saving permanent cure for the expensive coil pack issue.
Remove the coil pack, strip it down and clean it with some carb cleaner to remove grease, spray a good half tin or more on it.

The coil pack block is plastic and it cracks under heat and expansion, the cracks take in moisture and that causes the problem.

Warm the coil pack with a hair dryer for a good ten minutes to drive out any moisture from the tiny cracks.

Buy some quick set joiners epoxy resin like they use for window repairs, comes in two tubes, mix a quantity and fully coat the coil pack with the resin about 1mm thick with no gaps except neatly round the connection points.
Once set overnight, put the coil pack back on and that is usually the end of the problem for the cost of the epoxy.
Even brand new coil packs, soon crack again, the epoxy can be re-applied if it does ever crack but usually the problem stays cured.
    Be happy...;)

  • on a slightly related note, I have an emissions workshop light that comes on my car, it's caused by a faulty post cat lambda sensor so it's not a serious issues. It will cost £110 to replace and is non urgent.

Is an emissions worksop light a failure under new rules? The fuel isn't running rich so it should pass the MOT centres emissions tests. So If it passes the manual emissions test but has an emissions warning light what takes priority here?

My vw polo diesel '54 plate, has funny things going on. The ns window switch operated the os window and vv. This lasted for one day ! next the intermittent wipe stopped working. This lasted for one day. Today, the engine management light came on. There appears to be nothing wrong. I'm thinking that modern car electrics are too complex and too clever for their own good.
  • My 2010 Polo was fine when I first got it. However, the engine management light came on and it lost power. VW in Kettering could not find a fault despite it only doing about 15mph! They did manage to charge me £200.00+ for a service and telling me nothing was wrong.
The local garage found an issue and solved this with a stuck exhaust valve - another £400.00. The engine management lights are still on.
Now it is due for an MOT on Monday and the lights don't work. No dip beam. The bulbs are fine and there is no power to the bulbs. The fuses are fine so it appears this might also be an engine management fault.
If it was an Austin Allegro built by red Robbo in the 70's in Solihull I'd expect problems but it's a 2010 Volkswagen!
  • 2 years since I started this thread, I still have the car and the warning lamp still lights up now and again. It's off more than its on, so I ignore it.
  • Don't go back to VW.

Sign up to some VW/Seat/Skoda forums and see if anyone local to you has VCDS. Its a computer partyt that most (including VW dealerships) think is better than VW's own. They will be able to read any and all faults with full details of the parameters at the time for beer tokens.

Google VCDS map and the first pages has loads of links that you can type your postcode in and find your nearest owner. Be sure to check all websites as people will not be on all the maps.
