protection against fraud with credit card

I recently was the victim of credit card fraud, somehow someone in US used my credit card details to pay for something in america (I've not even been there, neither has my credit card). It was flagged up by my credit card company (Barclaycard) and they cancelled my card and issued me a new one.

I'd always thought that using credit cards you're protected from this sort of thing, i.e. if this happens you credit card provider will cover the cost of the fraudulent transaction. Is this the case, because the transaction still appears on my statement and I've had to pay for it basically.

What can I do?

Flag it as fraudulent and Barclaycard will look into it, issue a chargeback against the retailer and request documentation from them on the proof of sale.

It will remain, but not as any amount you have to pay. Once they have completed their enquiries, it will show as a reversal (if they billed it) or a confirmation of the concellation.

I wouldn't worry, as it was they who cancelled and replaced your card.
