Got the following, from
ESTA-SYS-SUPRT@cbp.dhs.gov - i thought ESTA's were valid for three years?

ATTENTION! The travel authorization submitted on August 13, 2010 via ESTA will expire within the next 30 days. It is not possible to extend or renew a current ESTA. You will need to apply for a new ESTA.

Please reapply at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov if travel to the United States is intended in the near future. If there are 30 or more days left on the old authorization you will receive a warning message during the application and be asked if you wish to proceed.

An ESTA is valid for 2 years or until the expiry of your passport. (whichever comes first).

Also stops being valid if any of the answers to the questions change.

Example:- you catch leprosy after getting arrested whilst breaking into a research lab and stealing a laptop.

The esta you had would no longer be valid.

Not a great idea IMO, what if you have problems renewing?

I would apply at least a month before

    I agree.
You are unlikely to have problems, but for the money involved it's probably better safe than sorry.
Doing it 4 weeks in advance instead of 2 will mean that you will only be paying an extra 19p.
