Bank Error caused DDs - claim compensation

Hi Guys

I am trying to reduce my overdraft at the bank and, last month because off the bank charges from the previous month, i went over the agreement. Spoke with the bank and they were happy to reset the the agreement. However, when trying to transfer funds over the pay a bill it cam to light that my account had been put on hold. The call centre operator also informed me that the account was showing that there would be £229 charges. He immediately reassured me that this would be refunded as these were in error, however because many of my direct debits did not go through I am being charged by my creditors for late payments, interest, overlimit etc. Can I (a) claim these charges back or (b) get my bank to contact my creditors and explain it was their fault in the hope that they will waive the charges. I'm in a cycle of charges eating into my income each month and feel I'm disappearing into a hole. I am separated and support myself and my 2 children age 20 and 16 who are both still in education so I get no money from them. I am claiming benefits (Child and Tax Credits) and get £7 per week from my ex to 'support' my son. I really would like to try and get these charges sorted out (I have to say I've been with Nationwide for over 30 years and they have been quite helpful of late). I also want to get off of anti-depressants but with all this stress there is no way.

    I take the view that if the bank provided a letter of apology and the creditor then chose to ignore it then there is a case for unfair treatment which the creditor may have to answer to the Ombudsman. It's not just the money but possible consequences for your credit file.

    You might reasonably expect the bank to offer financial compensation, anyway, if it admits its error.

    Go into branch with proof of what you've lost.

    They will decide one way or the other whether it was their mistake.
